Vibrotactile feedback to aid blind users of mobile guides
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this work, we report on a solution for providing support to the blind using mobile museum guides by exploiting the haptic channel as a complement to the audio/vocal one. The overall goal is to improve the autonomy and social integration of blind visitors. We followed an iterative approach in which the proposed system went through various user evaluations and further refinements. The final solution includes vibrotactile feedback enhancement for orientation and obstacle avoidance obtained through the use of unobtrusive actuators applied to two of the user’s fingers combined with an electronic compass and obstacle detector sensors connected wirelessly to the mobile guide. Our study indicates that vibrotactile feedback is particularly useful to provide frequent unobtrusive indications of useful dynamic information, such as the level of proximity of an obstacle or the distance from the right orientation. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Tactile Feedback to Aid Blind Users of Mobile Guides
In this work, we investigate how using the haptic channel as a complement to the audio/vocal one can provide better support for the use of mobile museum guides for blind users. The aim is to improve autonomy and social integration of blind visitors. Based on our previous experience in mobile guide design, the proposed solution aims to add tactile feedback enhancement for orientation support and...
متن کاملExploiting RFIDs and Tilt-Based Interaction for Mobile Museum Guides Accessible to Vision-Impaired Users
In this paper, we present a study aiming to investigate how tilt-based interaction, along with RFIDs for localization, can be exploited to support blind users in interacting with mobile guides. We describe the design proposed and report on a first user study, which also compared two different ways to provide audio feedback (short sounds or vocal messages) for the tilt-based interaction.
متن کاملAdding Vibrotactile Feedback to Large Interactive Surfaces
Interactive surfaces and multi-touch tables are increasingly available outside academic contexts, and are entering, for instance, work or educational contexts. A large variety of applications exists for a multitude of tasks. For interacting with these applications, existing interaction concepts are often directly mapped to the multi-touch surface, which is often limited by physical constraints....
متن کاملDesigning Guides for Blind People
Most blind users frequently need help when visiting unknown places. While the white cane or guide dog can aid the users in their mobility, the major difficulties arise in orientation. The lack of both reference points and visual cues are the main causes. Despite extensive research in orientation interfaces for the blind, their guiding instructions are not aligned with the users’ needs and langu...

—We investigate the use of audio and haptic feedback to augment the display of a mobile device controlled by tilt input. We provide an example of this based on Doppler effects, which highlight the user's approach to a target, or a target's movement from the current state, in the same way we hear the pitch of a siren change as it passes us. Twelve participants practiced navigation/browsing a sta...
